MIKHAIL
Damien left early this morning.
Honestly, I didnât think he would have put off work for as long as he had, resting and handing control over to everyone else. I knew he only rested for Catalinaâs benefit, but he was off now, trying to set up a plan of attack.
Damien still hadnât fucked her. And I didnât know if it was because he was still injured, or he was afraid to touch her, afraid he might go too far with her because of all the darkness he had been through.
My money was on the latter, though none of us had brought it up.
Gabriel would come to visit us soon. We were planning the attack on the cartels, and soon after, Nikolay would leave with Gabriel to execute the plan.
For now, it was a lull before the explosion.
I sat on the recliner and watched Catalina sleep.
Unlike my brothers, I was on Catalina watchânot that it was any hardship.
Nikolay was currently vetting out all the nannies we could hire to help care for the boys, but Catalina would have the final decision.
The sun had just risen when she stirred.
I stood up and walked over to the bed, sitting on the edge and watching as she woke. The dream was still in her eyes as she took me in, a soft quality in those brown irises that I couldnât get enough of.
I brushed away the strands of hair that had gotten on her face, my fingers gently skimming across the softness of her cheek.
âGood morning,â I said softly.
She cleared her throat before she spoke. âMorning.â
âHow did you sleep?â I asked, running my fingers mindlessly over her cheeks, drawing indistinguishable shapes.
âGood.â
My thumb came up to the tender skin beneath her eyes. The bags were slowly getting better, but she still looked tired. I wondered if there was still something worrying her. Ever since we got Damien, our entire group had been walking on eggshells with each otherâmainly, it was us walking on eggshells around her, afraid that one push from us and sheâd break.
Hell, Nikolay hadnât even threatened to punish her for sneaking out with us to get Damien back, when usually, that would have been the first thing on his mind.
As for me, I was still feeling bad about asking her to stay strong when I should have been strong enough to hold her together when she wanted so badly to fall apart.
I didnât often feel guilty over my actions, but it felt like I couldnât do anything right with her these days.
She wrapped her fingers around my wrist, bringing me back to the present. âAre you okay?â
I shook my head. I should be the one taking care of her, not making her worry about me.
I smiled. âWould you like to spend the day with me today?â I asked.
Her eyes brightened, and the small pressure I had felt on my chest since the moment she asked me to let her fall apart lessened marginally.
I didnât know why, but a part of me thought she might not want to be around me, at least not without the other two.
